The New Classic

In the pantheon of classic solidbody electric guitars, it doesn’t get any more classic than a Les Paul Goldtop with P-90 pickups. We present to you the Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90. Your fingers will fly on this guitar’s silky, bound rosewood fingerboard and Plek’d frets. Fitted with a pair of Gibson’s legendary P-90 pickups, this ’Paul growls with the big cats. All the classic elements are here: carved maple top over solid mahogany, trapezoid fingerboard inlays, and that iconic gold finish — even the ones you don’t see, like handwired circuitry with Orange Drop caps. And you’ll enjoy effortless playability courtesy of a satisfying vintage ’50s profile neck. If you’ve been wanting a modern Les Paul with a chunky neck feel, P-90s, and premium appointments, Sweetwater has the one you’ve been waiting for. Take a walk on the classic side with the Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90.

The P-90: dare to sound different

We have many fiercely loyal P-90 fans here at Sweetwater. These guitarists know that the P-90 offers a unique tonal palette that is distinct from — and complements — humbuckers and traditional single-coils. Gibson’s first successful single-coil pickup, the P-90 can be heard on countless classic recordings. With its biting treble and high output, the P-90 cleans up nicely when you roll back your guitar’s volume pot. It’s an amazingly versatile pickup with its own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker and almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the P-90 really wails. Plugged into a proper high-gain tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible with humbuckers — or with other single-coils, for that matter. To hear P-90s brilliantly deployed in historical context, check out Santana’s fiery Woodstock performance or the Who’s masterful Live at Leeds album.

Vintage ’50s neck and Plek’d frets for optimized playability

Comfort and playability were two of Gibson’s primary concerns when they were designing the Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90. You’ll be delighted by how this guitar’s vintage ’50s neck profile comfortably fills your hand in just the right way. For your playing pleasure, the rosewood fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness and bound with rolled edges so that no fret ends impede your dexterity. The frets are dressed to perfection using a Plek Pro machine for optimized playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you’re likely to own.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

Gibson gave the Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90 a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look amazing, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. The Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90 has the look and feel of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90 Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Mahogany body, maple top; gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish
  • Mahogany neck, vintage ’50s profile, gloss nitro finish
  • Rosewood fingerboard, 12-inch radius, acrylic trapezoid inlays

Maybe I just got lucky

I saw four of these gold tops so I just kept looking at the pictures until one spoke to me…I had mentioned my reservations to the sales rep about buying a guitar online without playing it first. This thing sang acoustically right out of the box …I adjusted the bridge and P 90's to my liking and I love it. One of the best sounding guitars I've ever played.

I have always wanted "THIS" guitar

I remember before MTV and Youtube was around, watching Barry Bailey live absolutely scorch this guitar on a video covering 'Spooky' with ARS. Please see the video, it is outstanding. I was backstage with them and up close right in my face with Georgia Rhythm. Even when I was a baby, all I wanted was a guitar. After watching that, I knew 'which' guitar. And now-- I have it. It is solid as a rock. The setup is perfect. But more than anything. It is VERY heavy and thick; which is what I want. The P-90s growl with that amount of solid mahogany and they shine too. I've run it through all-tube amps. Orange, Fender and Vox. It changes with each amp. This (might be) is my final guitar purchase. It's absolutely impossible to find a flaw. That's what I tried to do: find a flaw. There aren't any.

P90s….. yes

Very happy with this purchase. I've owned a Les Paul studio and a Les Paul traditional pro. I almost always go with stained sunburst finishes but I was struck by the gold top look with the P90s. The difficult choice was that the model comes in humbuckers or P90. I own a ES-330 with P90s, I really like the sound and response and I'm a big Grant Green fan. Is it for everyone? No. As my friend put it, the P90s fit the style I have developed and my playing technique. On the Les Paul I find the P90s have a more scooped mid sound and are less high output and likely to breakup (I.e. it's a single coil)but still have the neck and bridge sound I expect from a Les Paul. I play clean or with minimal gain so I don't notice the hum. Lots of sustain. I see no defects in the manufacturing process, very clean work. It's heavy which you get from a Les Paul. Neck is rounder and thicker than the 60s Les Paul neck and the necks I've had on a PRS custom 24 and 408. It's probably about the same as my ES-330 slim harpo and slightly thicker than my ES-275. It's all what you are use to, I've primarily played hollow body jazz guitars for the past several years so it feels great but if I was still use to my old PRS guitars I would think it was to thick. Set up wise, it came with high action. I put on the 12 gauge thomastik strings I use and I am comfortable adjusting the action and intonation. Using a stew Mac flat edge the neck is nice and straight. I dropped the action down to Gibson specs, high E side basically down as far as it could go, and no string buzz. Plays really well with action really low. And minimal need for intonation adjustment, was able to dial it in dead on with polytune, and I've rechecked it and intonation had kept and stayed in tune. Sounds different but good with diverse amps, solid state Henriksen, tube Mesa and tube fender. Case is nice new brushed beefier latches.

Amazing p90 LP

Always wanted a gold top LP and I'm so glad I opted for the p90 version. These pickups have all the guts and bite you expect, delivering endless amounts of harmonically complex sound with plenty of sustain. This is my fourth guitar from Sweetwater and all have been winners. As a comparison I have a 2021 LP standard unburst and this guitar rocks just as hard but with its own character. If you're hesitating on buying this guitar, don't, get one now and join the p90 club.

GoldFingers!!

Is there anything else that crackles with the wide open sting of a P-90? And, especially when it's so nicely paired with such an elegant goldtop Les Paul like this? Solid Mahogany and classic soap bars... That is a hard combo to beat!!
Gibson got this model just right back in the 1950s, and there really wasn't any need to reinvent the wheel here. That being said however… I can attest to the exquisite craftsmanship on display with this new guitar. My 2022 is flawless.
A dark rich gorgeous rosewood fingerboard combined with smooth chunky, (but not too fat) 50's neck, feels just right!
This instrument is a flows with ease through all genres: punchy-punk, jammin-jazz, raunchy-rock, clean-country, and even a little metal-mojo!!
Hey...just get one already.
