G&L’s Quintessential T-style Guitar

The Tribute ASAT Special is G&L’s quintessential single-cutaway bolt-on — its authoritative voice was tailor-made for authoritative rock ‘n’ roll. This balanced-sounding solidbody electric guitar is teeming with sustain, thanks to its poplar body, while its medium "C"-shaped neck and 9.5-inch-radius maple fingerboard provide supreme comfort and effortless playability. Twin soapbar-style single-coil Magnetic Field Design pickups yield a high-octane snarl with screaming harmonics, while a Leo Fender-designed G&L Saddle-Lock bridge ensures maximum comfort and singing sustain. The G&L Tribute ASAT Special includes sealed tuners and an eye-grabbing 3-ply pickguard.

Poplar body yields a balanced tone with killer sustain

The ASAT Special features a poplar body — a tonewood prized for its balanced blend of lows, mids, and highs. This electric guitar’s rock-solid hard maple neck boasts a comfortable medium "C" profile and an easy-playing 9.5-inch-radius maple fingerboard that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The guitarists here at Sweetwater appreciate the classic playability of the ASAT Special.

Soapbar-style pickups serve up a myriad of snarling tones

If standard Magnetic Field Design single-coils are too tame for you, you’ll really dig the G&L Tribute ASAT Special’s soapbar-style pickups. These jumbo-sized pups yield more output than G&L’s regular MFD single-coils, along with an in-your-face snarl that will lend authority to every note you play. These pickups exhibit more midrange than vintage Kalamazoo-built soapbar models, while maintaining that legendary design’s coveted harmonic complexity. The ASAT Special’s neck pickup produces a gorgeous bluesy crunch, while its bridge pickup delivers maximum spank and clarity — a must for leads that cut through a busy mix. The ASAT Special’s jumbo single-coil Magnetic Field Design pickups are punchy and well-focused, with truckloads of fat warmth and the perfect amount of top-end sparkle.

Leo's favorite creations

After founding two hugely successful guitar brands and consulting on the side, Leo Fender felt that he had unfinished business in the guitar world. Together with partner George Fullerton, G&L opened for business in 1979 and incorporated innovative design elements into their instruments, such as the Magnetic Field Design pickups, Dual-Fulcrum Vibrato, Saddle-Lock Bridge, and Bi-cut neck design. Leo was so proud of his new instruments that he famously declared that G&L's "are the best instruments I have ever made." Play a G&L today and experience the magic for yourself.

G&L ASAT Tribute Special - One Year Review

I bought the Irish Ale w/Rosewood fretboard exactly one year ago, but it's no longer available, so I'm leaving this review here. Initially, there was an issue with the 3-way switch that had to be dealt with because, after closer inspection, it appeared to be improperly wired. As a result, I was only ever hearing the bridge pickup. After rewiring, I thought I had it fixed but then the switch started giving a lot of crackle, so I contacted G&L directly and they sent me a free replacement. Shortly thereafter, that switch also started having issues! So, finally, I bought a new Fender replacement switch and it's been perfect ever since. All three positions are very distinct and functional. In fact, it's really those Jumbo MFD's that sets this guitar apart! The clean tones are nice and glassy, but overdriven is where these pups really shine. They LOVE gain. Pinch harmonics are effortless. You can also get some really nice twang from the bridge,if that's what you want. This ASAT is incredibly versatile. Just imagine standard Tele pickups - but on steroids. That's about what you can expect. As far as playability, it's easily becoming one of my favorite guitars. After getting it set up the way I like it, it just plays like butter. Super fast neck and fretboard. Solid hardware. Stays in tune, easy to intonate. Fantastic fit and finish. I love this guitar!

Lack Luster

I would neve r own one! I had returned yo a venue where I was a house lead guitarist for several years. As a guest appearence I was asked to sit in with the old band for an hour set. Not having one of my axes with me, usually my American standard Telecaster. I played the current players ASAT G&L Tele. Horrible! Lack luster at best... no sustain whatsoever. I felt like I was playing on a rust bucket AMC Rambler. Neck was not smooth at all. Flat no color tone. I agree with other review. A Squire woild have played better. Leo Fender must be turning in his grave. The guitar felt like a Chinese pine board made in the 60's you would find in a Top Value Stamp store. Seriously. Yes I'm an American Fender guy, but even my old white 50th Anniversary 90's MIJ Custom Telecaster played circles around that guitar. It had zero sustain worse than a MIM tele when they didnt have string through body designs. It played like plywood. Sorry G&L!

Another disappointment

Save the time and just go for a fender. These look like a fender but don't sound like one at all. And the sound was lack luster. Also terrible setup and intonation. Way off. Fender bullet would been better, no joke. Sharper fret edges than expected.
