Takes Tonal Adaptability to New Extremes

Saying that the Ibanez Prestige AZ2204N is a versatile solidbody electric guitar is massive understatement. Its Seymour Duncan Fortuna pickups tackle bluesy licks and metal riffage with equal aplomb, while its dyna-MIX9 switching system provides nine different pickup combinations for an endless supply of tones. It looks great as well, boasting a balanced-sounding alder body framed by an eye-catching tortoiseshell pickguard. Enjoy unprecedented comfort and stability, thanks to an ergonomic rear body contour, S-Tech roasted maple neck, and a slick-playing compound-radius rosewood fingerboard. Bend, twist, and dive-bomb with perfect intonation thanks to the AZ2204N’s Gotoh T1702 tremolo. Gotoh Magnum Lock tuners, an oil-impregnated bone nut, and luminescent side dots round out the AZ2204N’s top-shelf feature set.

S-Tech roasted maple neck offers stability and durability

The AZ2204N’s roasted maple neck was subjected to Ibanez’s S-Tech nitrogen-heating treatment, which increases its stability, durability, water resistance, and tolerance to temperature changes. The neck is then sealed with oil, resulting in a well-played feel. And it’s supremely comfortable — its fingerboard edge was finished with a smooth curve that extends through the border between the fingerboard and the neck to the fingerboard itself. Beyond that, this guitar’s oil-finished AZ oval "C"-shaped neck fills your hand nicely at the lower frets, while providing a more modern feel when you’re playing up high. You also get an oil-impregnated bone nut for maximum resonance and superior tuning stability.

Seymour Duncan Fortuna pickups yield an endless array of tones

The Ibanez AZ2204N’s Seymour Duncan Fortuna pickups are among the most sonically flexible we’ve heard here at Sweetwater. Laid out in an HSS configuration, these pickups deliver warm blues licks, shred-heavy metal riffs, and everything in between with the utmost in dynamics and clarity — even in high-gain situations. Beyond that, Ibanez’s dyna-MIX9 switching system provides nine different sound combinations and can shift between humbucker and single-coil modes with a flick of a mini toggle. You can even simulate a humbucking sound by combining the two single-coil pickups. Whatever tone you’re hearing in your head, the AZ2204N can achieve it.

Gotoh T1702 tremolo provides excellent tuning stability

Developed in collaboration with Gotoh, the AZ2204N’s T1702 tremolo features brass saddles and a brass sustain block, which ensure a natural, warm tone with quick response and amazing articulation. String skipping and hybrid picking are effortless thanks to narrow string spacing. Loading the guitar’s tremolo arm is a breeze, by virtue of the T1702’s snap-and-hold socket, and its arm torque adjuster allows for fine adjustments without any tools. The T1702’s stud lock screws lock the stud bolts in place, enhancing the instrument’s resonance and providing excellent tuning stability. Beyond that, the T1702’s non-recessed design provides an astoundingly smooth tremolo motion that's ideal for neo-soul-type players.

The AZ2204N's dyna-MIX9 switching system provides 9 different pickup combinations.

Fantastic Versatile, Modern, Classy with some more Traditional Vibe

I had one of the first series AZ back in 2019, a Premium model, which was very good although there were some things I didn't like that much or were not my cup of tea.
The veneer was not to my liking, the pickups although good were a bit hot to my taste and liking, and no idea if it's the basswood boy or the constructions difference, but when playing unplugged it didn't resonate as much, although plugged in was totally fine (but I tend to play unplugged as well so I look for guitars I enjoy playing unplugged too)

Then I decided to go to a traditional strat and later on I went for a Suhr Guitar. Suhr is fantastic in every way.

I sold my Suhrs because I was looking for a more vintage style strat but then decided wanted again a kind of superstrat HSS more modern sounding to replace a PRS I'm selling that it's great but a bit too much for me, and want a more player guitar.

I was thinking on the Suhr, but then I saw the 2021 Ibanez AZ with rosewood and tortoise pickguard, covered humbucker, and less hotter pickups and wow, this guitar was perfect for what I was looking. Looks very classy, I got the blue one, single-coils sound great, very good clarity (not vintage style like my other strat, but I like that because they complement very well and serve 2 different purposes), the humbucker is great for rock, hard rock and like 80's rock (I'm not into extreme metal so not looking for that sound). And unplugged this Prestige resonates well, different than the premium I had, so unplugged sounds alive, and like these pickups much more than the Hyperion (but that's my personal preference)

Neck is a bit thinner than the Suhr I had, but for a more modern approach is very nice and comfortable. I have no issues going from my 50's neck les paul back to the Ibanez AZ.

And quality is there.

Pros vs the Suhr, is that it has roasted maple that I really like, and the 9 switch soudn options, that for me having the neck and middle parallel is like having a neck humbucker which is really awesome, what a versatile guitar.
And of course the price!

Pros on the Suhr is that those really are on the top of their game in quality and pickups I liked the Suhr ones a bit more. And the neck on the Suhr is fantastic.

This doesn't mean the Ibanez is bad, on the contrary, I'm very very pleased and happy with the Ibanez, is more than enough for me, and even though the Suhr is amazing and overall I give them the edge over the Ibanez AZ, the AZ is top quality guitar too as well and I don't have the need to go for a Suhr with this AZ.

Great Stratocaster

This guitar is very easy to play. It took me some hours to get used to the neck but after that it's very natural. I sold a Musicman Cutlass (great guitar) and needed another Strat so I bought this one Do Not regret it. It's better than the cutlass IMHO.
It's very versatile, you can do a lot with the tone control and the different pickup configurations.
I play Jazz, blues, gospel, funk, RnB, countryish songs with it.
It does it all well.
I love the fact that it can sound very modern but, very old school and Classic at the same time.
Don't need to buy the Suhr I was looking at, this one is for life.

Awesome craftsmanship

If you're looking at this guitar you know basically what it is.. a hot rod S- type. I can attest to that.
The guitar is everything I expected.
Exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail.
I had it PLEK'd from Sweetwater, ( which I'll probably be doing with just about everything) but I get the sense this one didn't need it. I look at the frets with a jewelers loop, and have fixed a member of problem guitars with the time tested methods of luthiers. One of them by the name of "Wayne" hahaha most of you won't even get that.
Back to the subject… the frets were shiny, no tool marks whatsoever, just absolute perfection.
Now the only thing to watch out for is the neck. Love the radius. String spacing is a bit different than the big " F " name brand. But have an acoustic background and can go from neck to neck rather easily.
The only thing I didn't like was the pole pieces on the singles, cause a weird string imbalance problem. Rather common with vintages. It's a little hassle to fix em on a new guitar, and it was listed as such. No big deal.
Over all, loving the tonal qualities, beauty, and inspiration this guitar gives me. I see it on the wall and I just want to plug in.
Thank you Nate, Sweetwater tech team for suuuuper fast turn out.
BTW… I can set this guitar up at .002 neck relief and 3/64 action across the board!
Music background: Everything fun to play

Perfect

The Prestige AZ2204N is all but perfect. It checks all of the boxes. It is everything I looked for in a guitar. I prefer S type guitars. I also have a comparable Fender MIA Ultra Strat in Texas Tea. This is the only guitar I have found that can match the ultra.

There are few things where the AZ has an advantage. One, the roasted maple neck with stainless steel frets. After almost a year playing daily, the frets and the thick rosewood fretboard are visibly like new. The frets have no visible wear even with magnification. They could not be smoother. The back of the neck and its interface to the fretboard is so smooth it is imperceptible to the touch. The back of the neck is as smooth as a well played guitar (in a good way). Just as the Ultra, the fit and finish of this guitar are flawless. Every feature is just as I would have ordered from a custom shop. It is that nice.

I have one gripe and I knew it before purchase. The cable socket is backwards, the same as on an Ibanez S. I was never tempted to purchase an S because of the backwards cable socket. The AZ is so perfect in every other sense, I decided I could live with it.

I know there are some professional that prefer the backwards socket. Perhaps many consider it a great feature. I had to purchase a cable with a right angle connector so the cable points in a more normal fashion. With a normal straight in cable it sticks out at an awkward angle making it prone to get in the way and risk getting tangled and pulling the guitar out of my hands. Thank goodness for neck straps!

Sorry for the digression. This is pretty much a perfect guitar and it is available off the shelf. It is custom shop quality.

Ibanez prestige AZ 2204 N

My first review after buying gear for 20 years but this one deserves it. This is a phenomenal guitar.

First off, it was a demo that was supposed to have a couple scratches but I can't really find any. In near mint condition from what I can see.

Sounds and plays great. I've had USA strats and the like but the neck on this one is perfect. It's not razor thin like a shredder Ibanez or thick chunky either. It's just right. Just a tad bigger than my 2011 USA tele.

The maple neck and compound radius feels great and I didn't think I'd really notice the SS frets but they r noticeably easier to bend and play.

Bridge humbucker plays well with the single coils and the extra positions from the toggle switch do have very usable tones. It's not an in your face output at the bridge but it's not supposed to be. Hit the gain on your amp or effects and it's enough for 98% of the music anyone plays.

Best guitar I've ever had, you won't be disappointed.
