The Legendary Dreadnought, Reimagined

Many discerning guitarists instantly name the D-28 as their all-time favorite Martin; it is the standard to which all acoustic guitars are compared. Affectionately dubbed the "tone cannon," the D-28 deploys classic rich tone and powerful projection that's perfect for stage and studio. Martin has reimagined the D-28, blending the rich legacy of the guitar with their latest innovations. Vintage appointments include open-gear tuners, an aged toner top, antique white accents, and faux tortoise pickguard. Forward-shifted bracing allows for greater vibration of the top, while a modern neck profile gives you improved comfort and playability. We spend a lot of time with acoustic guitars at Sweetwater, and this D-28 delivers the iconic Martin sound by the boatload.

The dreadnought: a fascinating back story

Launched in 1906, Britain's HMS Dreadnought was the first all-big-gun battleship and the first to use steam-turbine propulsion. Larger, faster, quieter, and more deadly than any warship that had come before, it ushered in the modern era of naval warfare. In 1916, Martin, which had been handcrafting fine guitars since 1833, christened their new large-bodied acoustic guitars after the groundbreaking naval vessel. Ubiquitous today across musical genres, dreadnoughts deliver the volume and deep bass that makes them ideal for vocal accompaniment, solo work, and many other "unplugged" applications.

A cornerstone of modern music

Martin's early dreadnoughts set into motion the guitar's prominent role in modern music and set the standard for tone quality in acoustic guitars. Martin dreadnoughts became known for resonant warm tones, quality craftsmanship, and tasteful styling. For those reasons, Martin guitars became an important part of the music written and performed by the stars of the 1920s and '30s. The post-WWII D-28 became a cornerstone of the folk and folk rock music of the '50s and '60s. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Powerful sound, full bass

The Martin D-28 acoustic guitar offers the deep bass response that's made Martin dreadnoughts so popular. Yet it also has a high-end presence that sings out even in heavy instrumentation. Martin's D-28 is both loud and subtle and has a quick response. The powerful voice and full sound of the D-28 have made it a staple in the bluegrass world, but its bold sonic signature has been heard cross-genre.

Quality tonewoods deliver timeless tone

A quality acoustic guitar is all about the wood, and the Martin D-28 serves up a classic tonewood cocktail with no compromises. The top is solid spruce for big projection and spectacular note clarity. Its back and sides are made of solid East Indian rosewood, a classic Martin material. A solid wood neck with solid black ebony fingerboard gives the Martin D-28 amazing playing ease to match its awesome sound!

Martin D-28 Acoustic Guitar Features:

  • Iconic dreadnought design and tone from Martin
  • Solid spruce top for amazing projection and great note definition
  • Forward-shifted bracing pattern for optimized soundboard vibration
  • Solid East Indian rosewood back and sides for a well-balanced tonal range

That’s the Real Deal

Where do I start? It's a Martin D-28. Not much else needs said. The sound is articulate and thunderous. It can bluegrass strum, hit those near bridge lows like the man in black and be as sweet as a harp just with the nuance of your picking.
Initially out of the box Martin has the action set a bit high. I get why, action is a personal thing for guitarists. I highly recommend having a set-up done by a professional luthier. I did replace the bridge pins with bone pins, and the end pin with an ebony, pearl dot, to match the neck. If you can handle them, keep the .013 - .056 strings on it. It is a tone cannon and those are its cannon balls.
The finish is very nice. The rosewood is fine and the spruce top is thinly finished. No heavy polys to weigh it down. The neck is wideish and flat perfect for getting the articulation and crisp definition from the mid-range.
I relied on my sales engineer Kent Salaz to pick out this guitar. And he did it right. Nice coloration in the rosewood and a perfect top. No blemishes. Thanks Kent!
I this my lifetime achievement award. It has taken me 40 years to get to this level, and I'm enjoying every minute of it!

No Surprise

I just opened my D28 from Sweetwater and like the other six I have purchased there, this is a Fabulous guitar. The Sweetwater team is amazing! I always thank my sales engineer, who happens to be the most personable and professional I have ever encountered in the music business (you're welcome, Dan). I'm going to make the drive from my home to Sweetwater just to buy him a couple of beers and dinner. Anyway, I wanted to add a D28 to collection. I was going to buy another Les Paul, but got the D28 because you can't go wrong with a D28. Someday, it will be 50 years old and still in my family. The PlekPro option produces a smooth fretting of notes and just enhances playability. Gotta love Sweetwater.

Plays Like A Dream And Sounds Like Heaven

Finally, I got the guitar I've always wanted but couldn't quite justify. The D-28, a true legend and coveted by some pretty famous musicians—Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Jimmy Page, and so many more. I'm not remotely close talent-wise to the the names I just listed, but I can play well enough to appreciate this D-28's playability and "its sound", which is like no other. In my opinion, the D-28 deserves all the accolades, all the praise, and all the attention it has gained over the years. It is truly "The Acoustic Guitar". And may thanks to Matt and the guys in the Sweetwater shop for a seamless transaction and perfect setup!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Mike Brandt

I have been playing guitar for over 15 years, and the Martin D28 has become my go to instrument. When I’m at home and want to work on new song ideas or learn new techniques, I love its world class neck. And I'm able to achieve excellent sustain and dark, lush tones with the deep bass resonance I need for a full acoustic tone. And when gigging, I know have a reliable guitar that will work for almost any genre of music.

Nick Blough

Working here at Sweetwater, I have put my hands on tons of different guitars and the Martin D28 is hands down my favorite acoustic we sell. After the first time I picked one up, I knew that I would have to add one to my personal collection. The tone is incredibly balanced and works fantastic in almost any situation I want to use it in. This “Tone Cannon” also outputs plenty of volume to where if I am in an acoustic jam session, I know that I’ll never have to worry about not being loud enough.
